Is it Mission Impossible for Joe 90?
The ANSWER .... NO!!
On April 1st - the day of My Father's Birthday (he would have been 138!!) I acheived my ambition to walk the equivalent of John O’Groats to Land’s End before I turn 91.
The journey commenced on July 6th last year, on the day of my 90th birthday, and 269 days later at an average of 3.24+ miles per day I 'reached' Lands End.
The mission to raise £12,000 for five charitable institutions doesn't stop yet though. We are over half way there and the push is now on toward a final 'Triumphant' march in to Lands End on 6th July, my 91st Birthday with the aim to exceed a total of 1,000 miles over the year and get those collection tins ratlling!
As a reminderThe Rotary Club of Kimbolton Castle Charitable Trust will administer and distribute the donations to the five charities, namely the Salvation Army (and specifically their work in Chickankata, Zambia), the RAF Benevolent Fund, the Brainstrust, Mwandi School for Aids Orphans, Zambia, and the International PolioPlus Programme.
I am confident with all your help I can reach my target and each will receive a minimum of £2,000.
The plan is still to complete a live walk into into Land’s End on 6th July. I hope to see you there or at least along the way as I continue my walks around the parts of England I continue to visit.
Updates will be posted regularly here and by all means join me on my daily walk. www.Joe90Walk.co.uk
A resident of St Neots with my wife Jean since 2016, with whom I will shortly celebrate their 66th wedding anniversary, my motto in life is very simple – ‘You Are Never Too Old to Do Anything’ - and he and Jean remain active on many fronts. Jean as a member of the WI, and the Eynesbury Methodist Church Women’s Group and assisting at the Busy Bees Nursery, and Joe, not surprisingly, as a member of the St Neots Wellbeing Walks and the local St Neots Probus Chapter, as well as the Men’s Churches Together Group. They share 2 sons, Duncan and Stewart with their partners and 7 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren spread between Oxfordshire and Australia as the photos above lay testament to.
Prior to retirement Joe’s working life covered three distinct careers. Firstly, as a Musician/Bandmaster in the Royal Air Force Music Services and many other musical ensembles around the world, and secondly as a music teacher. He also worked at the Ministry of Defence as a Personal Secretary to the Secretary of State for Defence, Michael Portillo (Conservative) and George Robertson (Labour), before retiring to live in Spain in 2000.
